S2: CRUMBLING LAND (STUDIO - LONG VERSION)/RAIN IN THE COUNTRY (STUDIO)/EMBRYO (LIVE)*
SQ: EXCELLENT
COMMENTS: AMERICAN BOOTLEG. ORIGINALLY ISSUED BY TMOQ (1). LATER COPIED BY TMOQ (2) AND MANY OTHERS.
EARLY CV PRESSINGS ARE SOUGHT AFTER AND EXPENSIVE. LATER BLACK VINYL COPIES ARE MUCH MORE COMMON. SOME LATER PRESSINGS HAVE PLAIN WHITE LABELS. THIS RECORD HAS HAD MANY PRESSINGS ON THE TMOQ LABEL AND THE ORDER OF THEM SHOWN BELOW IS THE LOGICAL ORDER FROM THE PRESSINGS KNOWN TO THE AUTHOR. HOWEVER AFTER THE SPLIT BETWEEN THE LABELS ORIGINAL PARTNERS 'DUB' & 'KEN', TRYING TO IDENTIFY THE DIFFERENT PRESSINGS IS SOMETHING OF A MINEFIELD AND INVOLVES SOME EDUCATED GUESSWORK. WHAT CAN BE SAID WITH CERTAINTY IS THAT THE FIRST PRESSING AS SHOWN BELOW) IS CORRECT AND THE TWO SETS OF PLATES USED (PF515 & 1830) HAVE BOTH APPEARED WITH FARM PIG LABELS. THIS WOULD SUGGEST THAT KEN USED DUB'S LABELS FOR ONE OR TWO RUNS AFTER THE SPLIT - AND HE MAY HAVE USED DUB'S PLATES (PF515 A/B) ALSO. WETHER HE DID OR NOT, THE PLATES WITH THE MATRIX '1830' WERE USED BY KEN FOR ALL OF THE SUBSEQUENT TMOQ(2) ISSUES.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: DUB SPLIT WITH KEN AS EARLY AS MID 1971 AND SO IT WAS HE ALONE WHO RELEASED OMAYYAD IN APRIL 1972, AND HE ALONE ALSO WHO RELEASED THE GENERIC (PIGS IN WAREHOUSE) COVER. KEN, FROM 1971 ONWARDS WAS ALSO RELEASING HIS OWN VERSIONS OF DUBS TITLES (INCLUDING 'OMAYYAD') USING DUBS PLATES AND (FARM PIG) LABELS. THEREFORE IT WOULD BE NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO MENS EARLY (PF515) VERSIONS OF THIS ALBUM. KEN DIDN'T START USING THE 'SMOKIN PIG' LOGO ON HIS LABELS AND INSERTS UNTIL 1973, SO ALL PRESSING WITH THIS LOGO ARE FROM '73 ONWARDS.
FIRST PRESSING: (MATRIX PF 515) PLAIN WHITE OR COLOURED RUBBER STAMPED SLEEVE. & FARM PIG STICKER ON ONE SIDE AND PAPER INSERT WITH FARM PIG LOGO AND "LECOR PRODUCTIONS 1972" CREDIT ON THE OTHER. PRESSED ON COLOURED VINYL WITH LARGE 1 & 2 ON LABELS. AS THIS ALBUM WAS RELEASED IN THE FIRST HALF OF 1972, THE YEAR IN WHICH TMOQ STARTED USING THE FARM PIG LABEL ON ALL OF THEIR RELEASES, IT IS ONLY THE EARLIEST PRESSINGS WITH THE 1 & 2 LABELS. COPIES WITH MOTTLED OR SWIRLY VINYL PATTERNS ARE PARTICULARLY RARE AND VERY EXPENSIVE.
SECOND PRESSING:(PF 515) AS ABOVE, WITH RUBBER STAMP, PIG STICKER AND INSERT AND WITH FARM PIG ON LABELS. PRESSED ON COLOURED VINYL.
LATER TMOQ(1) PRESSINGS: (1830) AS ABOVE, WITHOUT RUBBER STAMP OR PIG STICKER AND WITH FARM PIG ON LABELS. BLACK OR COLOURED VINYL. THIS IS THE ROGUE PRESSING WHICH APPEARS TO MIX TMOQ(1) LABELS WITH TMOQ(2) PLATES (SEE 'COMMENTS').
TMOQ 'MADE IN HOLLAND' PRESSINGS: SOMETIME IN THE 1970'S TMOQ DECIDED TO ADD 'MADE IN HOLLAND' IN SMALL TEXT AT THE BOTTOM OF THEIR RECORD LABELS (SEE LAST PIC ABOVE) TO EVADE THE ATTENTION OF THE FBI. MANY OF THESE WERE EXPORTED TO EUROPE AND TO ENGLAND WHERE RICHARD BRANSON OF VIRGIN RECORDS WAS THE MAJOR BOOTLEG IMPORTER AND SELLER OF BOOTLEGS IN THE UK AT THAT TIME. COMICALLY, AFTER A RAID ON THE VIRGIN RECORD STORES, THE BPI (BRITISH PHONOGRAPHIC INDUSTRY) PROUDLY ANNOUNCED TO THE UK RECORD COMPANIES (WHO HAD BEEN BANKROLLING THEM FOR YEARS - AND STILL DO!) THAT AFTER MUCH THOROUGH INTERNATIONAL INVESTIGATION, THEY HAD DISCOVERED THAT THE COUNTRY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MAJORITY OF BOOTLEGS IN THE UK WAS HOLLAND!!!! THIS THOROUGH INVESTIGATION BASICALLY CONSISTED OF READING AN AMERICAN MADE RECORD LABEL.
GENERIC SLEEVE ISSUE: (PF 515) IN 1973 THE TMOQ PEOPLE DECIDED TO ISSUE A GENERIC COVER FOR SOME OLDER TITLES (AND ONES WHICH THEY DIDN'T EXPECT TO SELL MANY COPIES OF) AND USED A DESIGN CREATED BY THE GREAT ARTIST WILLIAM STOUT. THE COVERS FEATURED THE FAMOUS TMOQ SMOKING PIG IN HIS BOOTLEG WAREHOUSE AND HAD A DIE CUT SLEEVE THROUGH WHICH THE LABELS WERE VISIBLE (THIS ARTWORK WAS LATER USED BY 'THE SWINGIN' PIG' FOR THEIR INNER SLEEVES). ONE LABEL HAD A LARGE FARM PIG LOGO WITH THE ALBUM TITLE AND THE TRACKLISTING ON THE OTHER. NOT MANY OF THESE WERE MADE AND ALTHOUGH A SLIGHTLY LATER PRESSING THESE ARE NOW QUITE SOUGHT AFTER.
TMOQ(2) ISSUE: (1830 A/B) KEN'S VERSION OF THIS BOOTLEG FROM THE 1830 PLATES. FIRST PRESSING WAS IN A PLAIN (OFTEN COLOURED) SLEEVE WITHOUT A RUBBER STAMP OR STICKER AND WITH A PAPER INSERT WITH FARM PIG LOGO AND LECOR PRODUCTION CREDIT REMOVED AND 'MAMMARY PRESENTATIONS' LOGO ADDED IN THE BOTTOM LEFT CORNER. PRESSED ON BLACK OR COLOURED (USUALLY BLUE) VINYL WITH THE SMOKIN' PIG LOGO ON LABELS. LATER PRESSINGS WITHOUT A LOGO ON THE INSERT AND PRESSED ON BLACK VINYL WITH SMOKIN' PIG OR PLAIN WHITE LABELS. THE LAST PIC ABOVE SHOWS A BLACK VINYL COPY OF THIS EDITION WITH A RARE LABEL THAT LOOKS LIKE THE WORK OF VICKI VINYL.
PICTURE DISC RE-ISSUE: RE-RELEASED AS 'PINK FLOYD - LIVE VOL.1' ON A FULL COLOUR PICTURE DISC FEATURING THE 'WYWH' LOGO WITH MATRIX NUMBER 'APF 515 A/B', PRESSED FROM THE ORIGINAL TMOQ PLATES. (SQ: POOR).
SPLASH VINYL & MCV ISSUES: AT ONE POINT, TMOQ EXPERIMENTED WITH PRESSING A FEW TITLES ON MULTICOLOURED AND B&W SPLASH VINYL (SEE EXAMPLES BELOW). THIS WAS DONE WITH THE GRATEFUL DEAD (HOLLYWOOD PALADIUM PART ONE), DAVID BOWIE (IN AMERICA), DEEP PURPLE (PURPLE FOR A DAY), JETHRO TULL (MY GOD - ATHAPASKAN RECORDS) & BOB DYLAN (TALKIN' BEAR MOUNTAIN MASSACRE PICNIC BLUES) AND A FEW LED ZEPPELIN & ROLLING STONES TITLES. THIS WAS AN EXPERIMENT ONLY - ALTHOUGH A FEW COPIES DID GET OUT - AND THESE PRESSINGS WERE ASSIGNED UNIQUE AND SEQUENTIAL MATRIX NUMBERS. THERE MAY BE OTHERS BUT OVER 30 YEARS LATER, THESE ARE ALL THAT ARE KNOWN. RECENTLY, PICTURES OF 'OMAYYAD' HAVE APPEARED ON THE NET (& EVEN EBAY) WHICH APPEAR TO BE A PART OF THIS SERIES OF EXPERIMENTS, ONE SHOWING THE GREEN TMOQ 'GENERIC' OMAYYAD LABEL (SHOWN ABOVE). THEY ARE HOWEVER, A MIXTURE OF WISHFUL THINKING AND ADOBE PHOTOSHOP !!! - SEE ALSO, ENTRY FOR PINK FLOYD "LIVE" (TMOQ).
